Desert Retreat in Al Ain

This desert retreat sits on a large plot in the desert on the outskirts of Al Ain with the main villa nestled within the dunes at an elevation of 30m and orientated in a manner to draw in natural light into every part of the villa. From the different vantage points throughout the villa, the residents can experience nature within either a private or group setting to enjoy the evolving desert vistas through the course of the day.

This project is another great example where a close collaboration between architect and engineer achieved a design that surpasses the sum of its parts. From the outset we sought to understand the vision for the project from the many architectural references and adopted these as a central requirement guiding every engineering decision we made.

The building structure consists of insulated precast pigmented concrete panels with cast in connections to receive an in-situ concrete roof slab. The villa’s focal point is the double-height living space which consists of a glass enclosed lightweight steel frame with a large roof overhang which provides a seamless transition between the indoor and outdoor spaces.
